Just a moment before he actually flees, Johnny assists to Barton's death in an incident during the show. Skeptical, Johnny accepts, and the next morning Barton is healed from cancer and gives him his favorite motorcycle and blessing and lets him go away with his beloved Roxanne. When he discovers his father's lung cancer, Johnny feels ashamed for his plans of leaving, but the very night a stranger proposes him to sell his very soul, in exchange of Barton's health. When Johnny was teenager, he works with his father as a stunt motorcycle rider and he has a crush on Roxanne Simpson, who he wants to flee away with. Johnny was born to Barton Blaze and an unnamed woman. By calling the fire spirit within him, the spirit of vengeance, he will turn into Ghost Rider. After his father dies, the devil known as Mephisto (or Roarke) turned him into a demon who's head was a skull on fire. Strange goes on to say that the Spirit of Variance was once a regular Spirit of Vengeance, but “ underwent a revelatory shift in perspective.” Strange goes on to call it a “mutation,” of form and function. In his note, Doctor Strange explains that not much is actually known about the Spirit of Variance, largely because the Spirits of Vengeance worked together to suppress the Spirit of Variance. In the text piece, made up to resemble a page from Doctor Strange’s archives, readers learn that, at its core, the Spirit of Variance is a mutant.
